CycleGuard Multi-Stage Filtration System

Provides optimal mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration. A healthy aquarium requires “beneficial” bacteria. Power Filter Maintenance

• For maximum filter operation and efficiency, regular cleaning of the filter and its parts is recommended every two weeks.
• Always unplug the Aquaclear Power Filter prior to cleaning.
• First you want to remove the cover, filter basket, and discard water remaining in the filter case. Thoroughly rinse collected debris from the case, impeller cover and impeller assembly using clear lukewarm water.
• Then intake “U” tube and extension tube can be cleaned with a filter stem brush to remove any build-up of deposits.
• When all parts have been cleaned and thoroughly rinsed, reassemble filter and replace any scheduled media. Install the filter once again back on the aquarium making sure that the filter is tipped slightly forward.
• Then fill the AquaClear filter box with aquarium water. Finally plug the filter into an electrical outlet and the AquaClear will self-prime and begin running in a few seconds.

Media Replacement

AquaClear Foam Filter Insert: Replace Foam Filter Insert every two months. AquaClear Activated Carbon Filter Insert: Replace Activated Carbon Insert every month. AquaClear BioMax Filter Insert: Replace BioMax Insert every three months.

Model: 110. Tank: 90 gallon saltwater FOWLER tank.
I run the 110, along with two hang-on Aqua-C Remora protein skimmers (the original, medium size model). I have two 8-9 inch long fish, both purchased in 1988 and thus now 30 years old. I have limited mobility in my right leg, so under-tank sumps would be tough for me to manage. Instead I rely on large hang-on (HOT) products that I can reach. I believe the 110 has the highest flow rate of any HOT filter on the US market.

I use the included sponge filter and ceramic media, and add a mesh bag with PhosGuard to absorb phosphates. Nitrates run 20, so my skimmers are cleaning up adequately after two BIG fish, and the AquaClear keeps particulates down and the water clear. I only clean it when flow rate slows, which is every four to six months.

Because replacement parts are not stocked at my local fish store, I bought a second 110 unit to use for parts if needed. So far, after five years of use, the only non-original part presently operating in the filter is the U-shaped siphon tube, which broke because I dropped it (not a defect). You can buy some individual parts online, but the cost adds up, and for me, buying a whole complete unit (albeit sitting in the original box in the garage) made sense, since you have instant access to any needed part. The cost of a 110 at the time I bought unit #2 was $20 below today's cost, so for me it was a bargain.

Quiet, moves a lot of water, and easy to clean.At first I thought this filter was just "ok" because the water wasn't dirty, but it also wasn't crystal clear.But after reading several aquarium forums I learned about people using 100% poly-fil with their filtration.I decided to try this method before going with a canister filter and boy am I glad I did!I cut and placed the poly-fil after the mechanical filtration (sponge) in two layers ( just folded over) to the same length as the sponge and added the other filters ( carbon & bio).The poly-fil will compress so you do not have to worry about everything not fitting once you assemble it.After about 30 minutes I had the clearest water ever!The poly-fil will not affect pH levels and was purchased at a local wal-mart for less than $5 for a 36" x 45" roll.

Update:Also great for saltwater filtration. Just ditch the ceramic rings.

Following some DIY ideas from others, I made a basic Cat Drinking Fountain from AquaClear 20 and a rubbermaid container (I have replaced the plastic container with a glass container with the right size/shape later on).My cat used to wait by the sink day and night, whenever he hears human foot traffic to the bathroom.He wants the faucet drips *all the times*.He has the water bowl and water is refresh everyday but he prefers the *fresh* water.Most of the cat drinking fountains are NOT the dripping style, those were designed for water movement only.So I have to become creative.My cat was curious about this setting first, and stay away from it for a day or so because of the noise from the filter.He starts to drink from it after a day or so....It solves my problem (I no longer need to turn on-and-off the faucet dozen times a day for my cat) and the cat does not need to "wait" anymore.

My husband has enjoyed his fish hobby ever since his first little 10 gallon tank when he was a youngster.By the time we met, he had SO many aquariums and varieties of fish, it was almost a second full time job caring for them all!When we married and a wife, stepsons and eventually our grandsons took up an increasingly larger chunk of his time, he cut back and we now have only (ONLY?!) five active aquariums, all African cichlids, with pretty shades of blue, yellow and orange in the various sized tanks (125, 75, tall thin 55, and a tall 15 gallon hex all in cabinetry, along with a typical 50 on a stand in his "man-cave" that he uses as his "nursery" tank when the fish propagate - which is regularly - until they're large enough to fend for themselves.)He's accumulated a variety of filters as well - clip-ons, external and internal units - but his favorite BY FAR was always his AcquaClear 50, which he'd used for countless years on his 75 gallon tank (even though the AQ50 is recommended for 20-50 gallon tanks - he's had no issues whatsoever, the fish are healthy and - as mentioned - frequently procreating!)

When he'd become super frustrated with an expensive cannister unit he'd been using on his 125, he pitched it and ended up putting the AQ50 on the 125 (assisted by three power heads.)That obviously has meant he's needed to clean it more frequently, and in doing so just a couple of weeks ago had a piece of the impeller pop off, never to be found again.I was happy to be able to order the replacement part on Amazon since the local aquarium supply store he frequents no longer carries the brand, but at the same time I went ahead and ordered this larger AcquaClear 110 for him to use on the 125.You'd have thought he died and went to heaven when this little pre-Christmas surprise arrived last week!Though it was nicer aesthetically when the filter unit was hidden within the cabinet, knowing how much he believes in this AcquaClear brand and seeing how happy he is to have another for his "premier" tank, I can deal with it.It's very quiet, which is my main issue when it comes to clip-ons, so I'm a happy camper too!So who knows... maybe for his Christmas Eve birthday, he'll be opening an AcquaClear 70 to put on his 75, so his 50 can go with those babies he enjoys saving and watching grow!

12/12/15 update:Well, my husband is so thrilled with how well this 110 filter is working on his 125 gallon tank, that I did go ahead and order the 70 filter for his 75 gallon tank for his birthday as well.Looks like they've combined the reviews for all five available sizes - 110, 70, 50, 30 & 20 - on this one listing.Anyway, a happy hubby equals a happy me (usually anyway... not particularly on days when there are non-stop football games from noon 'til midnight!)

Troubleshooting Steps
If the filter doesn’t start, lift the Wonder Tube out of the filter and remove the Magnet Impeller
Assembly. Use tweezers to remove any stringy or hair-like material that may have twisted around the
shaft. Hold the assembly by its endcaps and try to spin the magnet. If the magnet does not spin freely,
rinse under a jet of tap water to “unlock” it. Now hold the magnet and try to spin the impeller one turn in
either direction. If the impeller doesn’t spin freely, rinse under a jet of tap water to “unlock” it. If rinsing
doesn’t free up the magnet or impeller, replace the assembly.

If you’ve replaced the assembly and the filter still won’t start, it is possible the carbon or aquarium
gravel may have lodged at the bottom of the Energizer Well. Slide the Wonder Tube up and down in the
filter box (with water still in it). If this doesn’t work, unplug the filter and empty it in your sink. Insert a
drinking straw–not a metal instrament–into the Energizer Well and try to break up any sediment. Rinse
the Energizer Well and re-assemble the filter.

To determine if the Energizer is functioning, plug it into an electric outlet and hold the Magnet Impeller
Assembly against its outside wall. If you feel a magnetic attraction, the Energizer is functional. If not,
replace the Energizer.
